Procedures offered include: medical hair restoration therapy, nonsurgical hair restoration, and surgical hair restoration.
Medical Hair Restoration Therapy
Hair restoration for both men and women can be provided through medical therapy, minimally invasive treatments or surgical restoration. Finasteride (Propecia®) and minoxidil (Rogaine®) are the two most popular medical treatments for hair loss. Various vitamin and natural topical treatments can also be recommended.
Nonsurgical Hair Restoration
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are a highly effective treatment for stimulating hair growth and may be an excellent option for the male or female patient with thinning hair. In a recent review written by Dr. Sand entitled: “PRP for the Aesthetic Surgeon“, many uses for PRP are discussed. They include topical application to improve healing after skin resurfacing, injection into face to remove wrinkles, and injection into the scalp for hair restoration. In particular, the use of PRP for hair restoration has been studied by multiple global investigators and has shown excellent promise as a treatment for thinning or micronized hairs. High qualities studies have shown this product to thicken hair shaft size, improve hair quality, and increase hair density. This combined effect can lead to fuller, healthier appearing head of hair. Dr. Sand can discuss the benefits of this treatment with you during your consultation.
Platelet Rich Plasma is a fascinating substance. During a PRP procedure, a multitude of growth factors and healing substances are extracted from a patient’s blood and then re-injected or topically applied. Hair that is sparse can be rejuvenated and weathered skin can be renewed. Here is a short video of an injection. I utilize topical anesthetic and a “tapping” technique to help make the injections more comfortable. This in-office procedure takes about 30-45 minutes, has minimal downtime, and can give great results!
Surgical Hair Restoration
Surgical hair restoration involves transplanting hairs from the back and sides of the head (which are generally resistant to hormonal loss from the action of DHT) and meticulously redistributing them to create a youthful, natural hairline. This process utilizes micrografts (grafts with one, two, three or four hairs at a time) angulated in the way hair naturally grows. The hairline is designed to fit the individual and the grafts are feathered into the scalp. This involves utilizing single grafts in the front and then artfully placing grafts of two, three and four hairs toward the back. The feathering technique results in improved density, fullness and natural microvariations within the transplanted hair, softening its appearance and making transplanted hair nearly indistinguishable from the natural hair. The result is a youthful and natural hairline that does not look surgical or produced. The hairs are harvested from the back and sides of the head as a strip (FUT, follicular unit transfer) or can be extracted individually (FUE, follicular unit extraction). All of these procedures are office-based and performed with local anesthesia. Fasting is not necessary and you will spend much time during the procedure reading, listening to music or watching movies. Surgical hair restoration is very well tolerated with a highly reproducible and natural result. The best option for you will be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Sand.
#Hair transplant is one of my favorite surgeries. During this procedure, hair is donated from the back of the scalp and placed into areas of thinning on the front, crown and vertex as individual follicular units. I am about to place the follicle on my finger into a microslit – high magnification is required. The hair begins to grow and the patient will have restoration of his full head of hair. The donor site on the back of the scalp is essentially undetectable. The transplanted hairs are robust and resist the thinning that previously occurred in those areas.
