Plastic surgery for men is an up-and-coming area. More men are seeking to augment their looks and are also requesting rejuvenation to remain competitive in the workforce. The goals of male plastic surgery are similar to that for women, with the intention being to restore youthfulness, reverse the tired and aged look, and improve feelings of self-confidence.
Many men have suffered trauma to their nose resulting in crooked or uneven noses. Some men also have either too large or small of a nose that does not sync with their other facial features. They may also have a large dorsal hump distracting from the rest of their face. Fixing the crooked nose can result in a restoration of facial symmetry and improved looks. Additionally, it may improve nasal breathing as well. During your consultation, Dr. Sand can evaluate your nose and discuss what functional or cosmetic changes may be beneficial for you. Additionally, Dr. Sand uses computerized imaging to help you ‘see’ your result.
Male hair restoration can be provided through medical therapy, minimally invasive treatments or surgical restoration. Finasteride (Propecia®) and minoxidil (Rogaine®) are the two most popular medical treatments for male hair loss. Various vitamin and natural topical treatments can also be recommended. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are a highly effective treatment for stimulating hair growth and may be an excellent option for the patient with thinning hair.
Surgical hair restoration involves transplanting hairs from the back and sides of the head (which are generally resistant to hormonal loss from the action of DHT) and meticulously redistributing them to create a youthful, natural hairline. This process utilizes micrografts (grafts with one, two, three or four hairs at a time) angulated in the way hair naturally grows. The hairline is designed to fit the individual and the grafts are feathered into the scalp. This involves utilizing single grafts in the front and then artfully placing grafts of two, three and four hairs toward the back. The feathering technique results in improved density, fullness and natural microvariations within the transplanted hair, softening its appearance and making transplanted hair nearly indistinguishable from the natural hair. The result is a youthful and natural hairline that does not look surgical or produced. The hairs are harvested from the back and sides of the head as a strip (FUT, follicular unit transfer) or can be extracted individually (FUE, follicular unit extraction). All of these procedures are office-based and performed with local anesthesia. Fasting is not necessary and you will spend much time during the procedure reading, listening to music or watching movies. Surgical hair restoration is very well tolerated with a highly reproducible and natural result. The best option for you will be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Sand.
A weak chin can cause imbalance of the facial features but is something that can be easily treated with a dermal filler or chin implant. The filler can allow a patient to ‘wear’ what an implant would provide but is a temporary solution. There are a variety of shapes and sizes for chin implants and the choice will be based on the computerized imaging analysis and the patient’s aesthetic goals.
Dr. Sand performs an advanced technique called a ‘deep plane facelift’, which is only utilized by a few skilled surgeons throughout the country. This type of facelift provides a natural, restorative, and long-lasting result. The procedure, however, is technically challenging and requires the advanced training that Dr. Sand has completed. During this procedure, Dr. Sand makes cosmetic incisions around the ear that heal with minimal visible scarring while taking care to not disrupt beard distribution and the sideburn. The facial tissues are elevated in an anatomically natural plane. Excess fat and skin are removed. The facial tissues are then re-draped and secured in location to restore your natural and youthful facial contours. The procedure is typically completed on an outpatient basis, though overnight accommodations can be arranged. Surgical time and recovery will vary depending on the procedure type and also on the patient.
Men often develop heavy necks with much excess fat, skin and muscle that require reshaping to provide youthful, natural contours. Dr. Sand uses advanced techniques to help excise excess skin, muscle or fat while tightening the underlying neck structures to restore a natural, youthful neck contour. This procedure is often combined with a facelift to provide an overall rejuvenation to the face and neck.
