Sweat is the human body’s way of cooling itself. However, sometimes that goes wrong. Hyperhidrosis is a condition in which the body produces excess sweat, often from the underarm area, but it may also do so from other parts of the body. Millions of people suffer from excess sweating, and the resulting odor, but that does not have to be the case. What Is miraDry®?
FDA-approved, miraDry® is a non-invasive treatment method designed to reduce sweat and odor. In this treatment method, electromagnetic energy is used to target the sweat glands below the surface of the skin. The energy causes the glands to heat up, destroying them. Once destroyed, the glands no longer function, reducing sweating in the targeted area.
How Does miraDry® Work?
miraDry® is a unique technology that delivers high levels of heat to the sweat glands beneath the skin in targeted areas such as your underarm. Because of the heat created, a local anesthetic is used to ease discomfort, and the skin will be cooled during the treatment session, as well. Aren’t Sweat Glands Important?
Yes, sweating is a vital bodily function and sweat glands are important to overall health. However, only about 2% of the body’s 2 to 4 million sweat glands are located in the underarm area. Destroying those glands does not impede the body’s ability to cool itself, but it does help alleviate the discomfort and embarrassment that millions of people experience due to excessive sweating and odor caused by hyperhidrosis.
How Many Treatments Are Required?
Many patients see permanent, lasting results with just a single treatment. Once miraDry® destroys sweat glands, they do not reform, leaving you drier and more confident immediately. Just one treatment is almost always enough to reduce sweating by over 80% and odor production by almost 90%.
How Long Does a miraDry® Treatment Last?
The procedure is about an hour but can differ based on the treatment area which varies based on patient size. A longer or shorter treatment does not change the results. Each area is only treated one time, but a bigger area obviously can take much longer. We do measure the area prior to treatment to determine how many treatment points we will have.
Are There Potential Side Effects?
It can feel like a mild sunburn in the underarm. We do apply ice and encourage ibuprofen and tylenol to aid in these transient side effects.

Don’t I need sweat glands?
While your body does need sweat glands to cool itself, your body has 2-4 million sweat glands – only about 2% are found in your underarms. Eliminating this 2% of sweat glands does not affect your body’s ability to cool itself. With miraDry, you will experience the many benefits of reducing sweat in the underarm area, but you will continue to sweat in other areas of your body.
How does it work?
miraDry uses thermal energy to create heat in the area where bothersome sweat and odor glands, as well as hair follicles reside and safely eliminates them.
What results can I expect?
You can expect immediate and lasting results. Once the miraDry treatment eliminates the sweat and odor glands, they’re gone for good. The treatment is clinically proven to have an average of 82% sweat reduction and 89% odor reduction. As with any aesthetic treatment, patient results and experiences may vary.
How many treatments will I need?
You can see results in as little as one treatment. However, as with any aesthetic treatment, your physician will determine the best protocol for your desired results.

An appointment will generally last about one hour.
Is there any pain or downtime?
Most patients describe the procedure as painless with little to no downtime. Local anesthesia is administered to the underarms prior to the treatment for patient comfort. Most patients return to regular activity (like returning to work) immediately. Exercise is typically resumed within several days. You may experience swelling, numbness, bruising, and sensitivity in the underarm area for several days after treatment.
Is it safe?

Are there any side effects?
Some localized soreness or swelling will occur, and typically clear within a few weeks. Some patients have short-term altered sensation in the skin of their underarms or upper arms, which gradually disappears.
