When You Should Consider Hair Restoration

Struggling to accept your ever-thinning hair? It can be a struggle. As your hair thins, it ages you and makes you look less healthy and virile. When should you consider hair restoration, though? Is there a “right” time? We’ll discuss what you need to know in this post.

If You’re Young, Wait

Male pattern baldness typically affects men in the middle of their lives. However, it can show up as early as your late teens. If you’re young and starting to see signs of thinning hair, should you go ahead and act now? The best advice might be to wait a little while. Why is that, though?

Here’s the thing: your hairline is still forming until about age 29. While you might notice it receding some during your 20s, there’s a chance that it’s not actually hair loss so much as it is the development of your mature hairline. The ideal option is to wait until about age 35 to consider hair restoration, because by that point, your hairline has stabilized and any further recession will usually be due to male pattern baldness and not your natural hairline maturation.

You See Regular, Ongoing Losses

For some people, hair loss is limited. It might thin a little bit, but not enough to be very noticeable, except by you. If that sounds like your situation, you may decide to wait and see what happens over time. After all, if your hair loss is very mild, chances are good that the results you see from hair restoration are also going to be hard to spot. However, if you’re noticing regular, ongoing hair loss, it is probably time to speak with a specialist.

Medical Conditions

If your hair loss is related to a medical condition or medication that you are taking, you may need to speak with your doctor before pursuing hair restoration. This is because you may need to wait until the medical condition has been addressed, or you no longer need the medication before pursuing hair restoration.

The Hair Restoration Method

There are plenty of hair restoration methods on offer today, and many of them require no surgery at all. For instance, you might decide to try out a topical treatment like minoxidil (Rogaine), or maybe consider another option like laser hair restoration or PRP injection. Each of these has its own pros and cons, and you’ll need to make an informed decision about your needs and goals.

There is also the option of hair replacement surgery. This is a permanent solution to hair loss, and it does not have the same potential for side effects found with topical treatment options. However, it is a surgical procedure and will require at least some recovery time. There are many new methods on the market today, too, including follicular unit transplantation, and the more modern follicular unit extraction technique.

If you’re ready to consider your hair restoration options, speak with a specialist who can explain your options, and help you understand which method will be right for your degree of hair loss, as well as your goals and budget.
