Botox vs. Dysport – What’s the Difference?

It’s becoming more and more common for individuals to choose injections to reduce or prevent the signs of aging. If skincare products like creams and serums are no longer working, the next step might be to consider Dysport or Botox injections.

Both Dysport and Botox are botulinum toxin injections. They are used to prevent and treat wrinkles. However, it’s important to know the differences between the two types of injections. Below you can learn more and decide which injection might be right for you.

Choosing Between Botox and Dysport

Each of these injections is a neurotoxin that blocks the contraction of muscles. While they can also be used for spasms associated with neurological disorders, they are most often used for the presence of wrinkles.

Dysport is FDA-approved to reduce the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines. These are lines between your eyebrows that go from top to bottom. Glabellar lines are more noticeable when someone is frowning. They also become more noticeable during aging, as the skin loses its elasticity.

Botox is also FDA-approved for glabellar lines, but it goes beyond that. It also holds FDA-approval for help with crow’s feet and forehead lines. The number of injections needed, however, depends on which area is treated and what results are wanted. For example, glabellar lines need about 20 units on five sites while crow’s feet require 24 injections at six injection sites.

Session Length

Another thing to consider is how long the injection processes take. In this case, both are done in only a few minutes. Putting on a topical anesthetic and letting it dry takes longer than the actual injection. And generally, you can leave right after the procedure is done.

Whether you choose Botox or Dysport, they both are effective at temporarily and efficiently treating moderate and severe wrinkles. Anecdotally, patient’s feel that dysport may offer quicker effects, but Botox can provide its effect for a longer period. Follow-up injections are needed to retain the results you desire.

Side Effects

Very little pain is associated with Botox or Dysport injections. The most you will likely feel is a bit of pressure as the fluid enters the muscles of your face. After this is done, most people can leave immediately.

Some people experience side effects with the injections, but this is uncommon. Most of the time, these will go away without any problem. Serious risks are possible but are quite rare. When you speak with a plastic surgeon about injections, make sure to discuss the risks so you know what to watch for.
