The sun is life-giving, healing, and essential for our existence. However, it can also be damaging. Simply going outside without appropriate protection can cause damage to the skin, eventually leading to problems like depleted collagen production and even sun spots. There is good news, though: intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy can offer the healing and rejuvenation you deserve.
Once called age spots or liver spots, sun spots are flat, dark areas on the skin. They usually appear on the face, but can also appear on the hands, arms, and other areas. While harmless (noncancerous), they can mar your appearance, aging it, and adding unwanted blemishes.
You will find many different sun spot treatment options out there, from at-home options such as using aloe vera to soothe the skin or apple cider vinegar to lighten the spots to in-office treatments like intense pulsed light therapy.
Intense pulsed light therapy, or IPL, is precisely what it sounds like. It’s a type of light therapy and has been in use for many years. In addition to treating sun spots, IPL can also be used to lighten freckles, heal varicose veins, treat rosacea, and even remove unwanted hair from your face, neck, and other parts of the body.
During a session, your physician will use a device to generate intense but scattered light waves across the treatment area. The pigmented areas of the skin (sun spots, for instance) absorbs the light energy. Once absorbed, that energy transforms into heat, which destroys the pigment in that area.
While both IPL and laser treatments are types of light therapy, they are not the same. Laser therapy uses intense, highly focused light beams in a single wavelength. IPL, on the other hand, uses scattered light in different wavelengths, which allows it to penetrate the second layer of the skin without harming the upper layer.
Every patient is unique – you have specific goals and challenges that differ from everyone else. It’s important to follow a customized treatment plan based on your specific goals and needs. That begins with an initial consultation during which your physician will learn more about what you want to achieve, explain the process, and highlight the results that you can expect with the initial treatment, as well as whether additional treatments may be necessary.
IPL therapy for sun spots is a non-invasive, painless procedure. It requires no downtime and is pain-free.
IPL can treat even darker sun spots, as well as being used to rejuvenate the skin, improve elasticity, and increase collagen injections. However, it may not be the ideal treatment option for everyone. It is important to work with your physician to determine your needs, understand your goals, and then explore treatment options to help you achieve the rejuvenation you want.
